Next
club meeting Monday 7th July
2014.
Meetings are held
at the
June Meeting
Twenty six members
attended the Annual General Meeting and Annual Display Competition which
followed the usual format. There were apologies from Peter Hall, Michael Gouby,
Henry Stanbrook and Tony Merson. The minutes of the 2014 AGM were approved with
no matters arising.
As the reports for the AGM
were circulated with the May newsletter only a summary was presented on the
night, in order to elicit comments from the membership that may help to guide
the committee. Alas there were few comments.
A brief summary of the main
points is as follows:
Thanks to the organisers all
the events and club nights went off without a hitch. All the booked speakers
attended.
The club is in a healthy
state; our finances are good and the membership numbers are holding up
(currently 45) although we were saddened by the loss of Frank Milward. While
John has revitalised the newsletter the Chairman expressed disappointment that
no newsletter articles have been received from the membership.
The Treasurers report
highlighted a small loss of £243 this year due to the purchase of a computer
for £199 and subsidies for the Christmas and 50th Celebration
dinners.
As we have a healthy reserve
of £2238 there will be no rise in club fees this year. However, with a 17% rise
in hall hire fees & other potential increases the Committee will be
reviewing the financial trends for a possible £4 rise next year. Answering a
question we stated club fees had been static for about
10 years
The only membership issue has
been delivering the newsletter via the internet, now hopefully resolved.

There was nothing to report
regarding the Library. The response to our publicity leaflet has been
disappointing – in fact a waste of time. The best publicity is word of mouth;
hence we all must all spread the word at every opportunity.
With no nominations for the
Committee from the floor the elected committee (which gets smaller each year)
is Mick, Peter & John. After the Meeting Ian agreed to join the committee;
a welcome addition as we need a spread of views in the Committee.
Neil & Gavin agreed to
continue as Auditor & President respectively. Henry stood down from the
Committee and, by way of thanks for his services in creating the Speaker
programme for several years, was nominated as Vice President.
Under AOB the membership were
requested to suggest ideas for a memorial to Frank Milward. Favourable comments
were expressed with regard to the visit by Worthing club members. Details of
the Church anniversary were tabled.
The formal AGM was then
closed and there followed the Annual Display Competition.
Annual Display Competition
There were 5 entries.
Tony brought along various denominations of Charles
1st coins struck at the Tower under Parliament. They illustrated the wide
variety of mintmarks and differing portraits and how the series can build into
a substantial collection.
Jewaid displayed a small collection of Charles 2nd
shillings some of which are very scarce. One rarely sees the Guinea head
shilling and the 1675 large head is another hard to get coin.
Gavin’s display of
troublesome tokens well illustrated the plight of collectors in identifying
pieces that are not in the books and on the internet. Even when the piece has
much information on it there can still be problems. Gavin also gave a plug for
Token Congress being organised by 3 Reading members.
Chris & Rachel produced a large display, superbly
annotated, illustrating the development of art in coins. Examples ranged from
the ancients to modern with many of the latter being of a form unlike any
traditional coin.
Neil produced an extensive display of medals and
products from the archive of John Pinches. Neil worked at Pinches and was able
to acquire the archive when they were bought out by the Franklin mint
All the displays were interesting in different ways
but there has to be a winner. Well this year we had a dead heat for the Michael
Broome Cup with Chris and Rachel and Neil in a tie, only the second time this
has occurred in the life of the club. Well done to both who will each hold the
cup for 6 months.
